Do your kids love playing games. Mine love it. They are 5 and 7 years old. I received the Pop for Word Families Game from Learning Resources and my kids couldn't wait to play it. This game is geared towards grades 1 and up, but my Kindergartener was able to play with the assistance of an adult or my 2nd grader helping her. This game is great to help with reading skills. The game itself is suitable for 2 to 4 players. I was so excited for them to start playing.
The game was simple enough for my 5 and 7 year old to play together, but it wasn't frustrating. I know my kids give up easily if a game is too frustrating. However, the game is still challenging enough for their age group. The game is really cute. The little popcorn box is filled with little popcorn shaped cardboard pieces. Each player spins and then they pick a piece of popcorn. The popcorn has either a beginning or ending word sound. The word sounds are ones that you can add multiple letters to in order to make a number of words. So you can either spin a 1, 2 or 3. For example: if you spin a 2 you will attempt to make 2 words using the beginning or ending word sound. This is really fun for my kids to do. My 7 year old is able to read the sounds on each piece of popcorn, but my 5 year old can't just yet. My 7 year old helped my 5 year old by reading the word sound to her and she was still able to add letters to it and make a word. If the player pulls a piece of popcorn out that says POP then that players puts all the popcorn pieces back in and has to start over. The player with the most popcorn pieces collected wins. You collect the popcorn pieces by creating the correct amount of words with the word sound you pick.
I really loved playing this game and watching both of my kids play too. It was challenging enough for both of them, but definitely wasn't overly frustrating. I love that they enjoy the game, but are learning while they play. This is a great way to help build reading and spelling skills. I also really love that the game is compact and great if you want to take it with you on the go. The game is also easy to store and I love that it doesn't take up a ton of room either. Do you know someone that would enjoy playing this game? You can purchase Pop for word Families directly from the Learning Resources website for $9.99. This would make a great gift for children that are new readers too!
